Microsoft Host Integration Server 2010 (HIS 2010) technologies
and tools enable enterprise organizations to integrate existing IBM host
systems, programs, messages and data with new solutions based desktops, devices
and servers running Microsoft Windows operating systems.
HIS 2010 is available in one technology package that is
licensed as supplemental software to core editions of Microsoft BizTalk Server
2010 (BTS 2010). HIS 2010 is comprised of server components and client
components. A BTS 2010 processor license is required for each processor on
which you install any server component of HIS 2010. However, HIS client
components may be installed on a separate device without acquiring a processor
license.
Q. Which editions of BTS 2010 include HIS 2010?
A. Microsoft offers HIS
2010 as supplemental technology with these editions of BTS 2010.
·
HIS 2010 is licensed through BTS 2010 Enterprise
Edition (BTS 2010 ENT) for customers with enterprise-level requirements for
high volume, reliability, and availability.
·
HIS 2010 is licensed as supplemental technology
to BTS 2010 Standard Edition (BTS 2010 STD) for businesses with moderate volume
and deployment scale requirements.
·
HIS 2010 is licensed as supplemental technology
to BTS 2010 Branch Edition (BTS 2010 BR) for remote deployment scenarios.
·
HIS 2010 is licensed as supplemental technology
to BTS 2010 Developer Edition (BTS 2010 DEV) for development and testing
purposes.
·
HIS 2010 Evaluation Edition is for evaluation
purposes.
Customers that have distributed topologies (such as
deployments in branch offices or warehouses) should consider licensing HIS 2010
through BTS 2010 BR.
Q. What are enterprise deployments of HIS 2010
licensed with BTS 2010 ENT?
A. Enterprise
deployments of HIS 2010 are where you utilize the HIS 2010 server components in
a central location for enterprise-wide connectivity, enabling divisions,
business units or branch offices with host connectivity that offers the highest
scalability. An enterprise deployment is not limited in terms of servers,
processors, scalability, load balancing or failover. A typical enterprise
deployment is a farm of multi-processor servers that run Internet Information
Services, SharePoint Server, or Microsoft SQL Server to host on-line
transaction processing, collaboration, or business intelligence applications
that connect to host systems using Transaction Integration, Session Integrator
or Data Providers.
Q. What are standard deployments of HIS 2010
licensed with BTS 2010 STD?
A. Standard
deployments are where you utilize HIS 2010 server components in parts of your
organization that require average connectivity with moderate scalability, basic
fault tolerance and essential failover. Standard deployments are limited to 2
processors. A standard deployment can be two or more SNA Gateway servers working
together as part of a group called an “SNA subdomain”, enabling basic load
balancing and fault tolerance, providing centralized host connectivity for
distributed applications.
Q. What are branch deployments of HIS 2010
licensed with BTS 2010 BR?
A. Branch deployments
are where you utilize the HIS 2010 server components at the endpoint of your
internal network or edge of your organization. Typically, in these remote
locations you require limited scalability and no clustering. Branch deployments
are restricted to a single server with two processors. A common branch
deployment is a single HIS 2010 server operating as an SNA gateway, to
consolidate local branch connectivity to a remote IBM host data center,
connecting the branch to the data center using High Performance Routing over Internet
Protocol.
Q. What is the definition of a Host Integration
Server application?
A. In Host Integration Server 2010, an application is a
logical grouping of all the HIS design-time artifacts (metadata assemblies,
connection definitions), connectivity services (link services, SNA services,
host print services, TN services, Session Integrator and Transaction Integrator
runtimes, data provider clients) and other related items that support an
integrated business process. For example, if you are deploying a retail banking
solution using HIS 2010, the teller application (based on 3270 or APPC APIs)
and required device types (SNA PU 2.1 node), logical units (LU2 or LU6.2),
physical units (dependent or independent connections), users, and link service
would constitute a single HIS application. Similarly, if you are deploying a
retail insurance solution using HIS 2010, the claim application (based on
Session Integrator or Transaction Integrator), metadata and data conversion
libraries, and connectivity clients for SNA or TCP/IP would comprise a single
HIS application.
Q. Does licensing HIS 2010 through BizTalk
Server 2010 allow for virtualization?
A. Similar to SQL
Server Enterprise, BTS 2010 ENT can be licensed for unlimited virtualized
processors that are available on a single physical server. The customer will be
required to license the number of physical processors on a server running HIS
2010 server components.
Q. What are the HIS 2010 server components?
A. These HIS 2010
server components are for use on a server computer to support multiple
concurrent client programs with access to IBM host resources (such as programs,
messages and data).

Q. How can I install the client components only?
A. The HIS 2010
installation program includes a Component Installation dialog, allowing you to
select the (a) server components, (b) client components, or (c) both.
Q. Can I license BTS 2010 BR to use the
BizTalk-specific features of HIS 2010?
A. BTS 2010 BR is
intended for intra-enterprise spoke scenarios and offers a subset of the full
functional capabilities of BTS 2010 ENT or BTS 2010 STD. The BizTalk-specific
features of HIS 2010 cannot be licensed for use with BTS 2010 BR. To use the
HIS 2010 BizTalk Adapters and BizTalk Pipeline Component, you must license BTS 2010
ENT or BTS 2010 STD.
Q. How do I install the BizTalk-specific features
of HIS 2010?
A. Previously, the
BizTalk Adapters were installed using the BizTalk Adapters for Host Systems
(2.0) technology package. In HIS 2010, you install these BizTalk-specific
features using the HIS 2010 installation program.
·

These BizTalk-specific features of HIS 2010 are listed as
server components in the HIS 2010 installation program. HIS 2010 will upgrade
existing installations of BizTalk Adapters for Host Systems (available with HIS
2006) and BizTalk Adapters for Host Systems 2.0 (available with HIS 2009).
Q. Is there an edition of HIS 2010 for
development and testing purposes?
A. Many customers deploy HIS 2010 into separate development,
testing, and production environments. For development and testing environments,
you can use the free download of the BTS 2010 DEV that includes HIS 2010 as
supplemental software.
Q. What are the software requirements for HIS
2010?
A. For information on software requirements, see the HIS
2010 Installation Guide.
Q. May I run the 3270 Client (emulator) or 5250
Client (emulator) client components on a desktop and connect them directly to a
host computer via a TCP/IP network connection?
A. You may use the
client components when the use is with the server software directly. When you
connect the 3270 Client (emulator) or 5250 Client (emulator) directly to a host
computer via a TCP/IP network connection (TN3270 or TN5250), you are not utilizing
the server software (such as the SNA gateway, TN3270 Service, or TN5250
Service). You may use the 3270 Client (emulator) or 5250 Client (emulator) on a
client computer only when they connect via an upstream HIS 2010 server computer
using the client-server connection to the SNA Gateway server features, TN3270
to the TN3270 service, or TN5250 to the HIS TN5250 Service.
Q. Do I have to
acquire licenses for all devices on which I run client components such as the
data providers for DB2 and host files?
A. You may use the
client components when the use is with the server software directly. For
example, you may use the OLE DB Provider for DB2 on a desktop computer with a
Microsoft Office productivity tool (such as SQL Server PowerPivot for Excel),
when using an SNA network connection to the host mainframe computer through an
upstream HIS 2010 server computer running the SNA gateway server software.
Q. May I run the data
provider client components on a desktop and connect them directly to a host
computer via a TCP/IP network connection?
A. You may use the
client components when the use is with the server software. When you connect
the data providers directly to an IBM host server computer via a TCP/IP network
connection, you are not utilizing the server software (such as the SNA
gateway). You may use the data providers on a client computer only when they
connect via an upstream HIS 2010 server computer using the client-server
connection.
Q. May I install the "Master Secret
Server" SSO component on a separate server?
A. In certain cases,
the preferred or recommended architecture may require you to install the
“Master Secret Server” Single Sign-On (SSO) component on a separate server for
security purposes. For each BizTalk Server 2010 processor license you own, you
may run or otherwise use any number of instances of the “Master Secret Server”
Single Sign-On (SSO) component in physical or virtual operating system
environments on any number of devices.
When licensing HIS 2010 based on BizTalk Server 2010 STD,
the Master Secret Server software may not be used on a server that is part of a
networked cluster, or in an operating system environment that is part of a
networked cluster of operating system environments on the same server. It cannot be shared by more than one
operating system environment in which you run the server software. BizTalk
Server 2010 ENT is the only edition that supports clustering of the Master
Secret Server.
